by Justin Brass Let’s delve deeper into “taboo” OCD topics by covering the subtype of sexual OCD. The more we talk about “taboo” OCD topics, the more we reduce shame, stigmas and take power back from OCD. Are you ready to stand up to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and start breaking down those taboo barriers? What is sexual OCD, you may ask? Sexual OCD is a subtype of OCD in which individuals endure unwanted, intrusive sexual thoughts (OCDNorth, 2021). Who experiences sexual OCD? According to the poll conducted by OCD North community, 52.9% of individuals shared having experienced intrusive thoughts consistent with sexual OCD. As well, sexual OCD does not discriminate, as individuals of all ages, races, and genders can share this experience (OCDNorth, 2021). What do sexual OCD obsessions look like? Obsessions may involve children, animals, family members, violence, religious figures, unwanted same-sex activities, or fears about sexual orientation changes, among other things (OCDNorth, 2021). Is sexual OCD like having sexual fantasies? No. Those with sexual OCD are greatly distressed by their intrusive thoughts. In fact, they often view the thoughts as immoral, which provokes guilt and avoidance. Hence, this is not an enjoyable experience for anyone who suffers with sexual OCD (OCDNorth, 2021). Key Points Individuals living with sexual OCD are not dangerous, perverted, or hypersexual, as they can fear these thoughts and endure much distress because of it. There is no shame in experiencing intrusive sexual thoughts. Lastly, recovery from sexual OCD is possible and it is important that individuals are getting the help that they need (OCDNorth, 2021).
