By Grace Manning, Head Writer With every passing semester, class, and textbook, we hear about the same names in psychology; Freud, Skinner, Maslow...but this month we’re asking, where are all the women? It seems that there is a gender gap - whether it's about their contributions to the field or as the focus of studies, women seem to be left out of the narrative in psychology. As a part of Women’s History Month, there is a push to give women recognition they so rightfully deserve as researchers and for the contributions they have made in the field.

by Justin Brass Let’s delve deeper into “taboo” OCD topics by covering the subtype of sexual OCD. The more we talk about “taboo” OCD topics, the more we reduce shame, stigmas and take power back from OCD.

Content warning: This post discusses personal experiences with mental health, and sensitive topics of BDD (body dysmorphia disorder). Please read with caution. The social identities of people are categorized through a psychiatric model of studying mental health, which treats women’s mental health quite problematically. This is due to how psychiatry is presently structured in relation to its own historical biases, which have apathologized women’s experiences for many centuries through feminine distain. by Shayndel Jim
What does it mean to be Asian? What does it mean to be Canadian? Throughout my life, I’ve asked myself the latter far more than the first one. I first started asking it when at the age of 5, my teacher told my parents I would never be good enough at English to succeed in this country. I asked myself that question when I lied when I had to track my food for health class, noting down sandwiches and pasta because I was embarrassed by the ethnic food my parents made. I worked hard in school to prove those who said I wouldn’t succeed that they were wrong, but I found myself falling into the stereotype of being an Asian who did well in school and the question echoed in my head as if it were a constant reminder that I would never truly be Canadian. by Justin Brass
The challenge that many of us face when entering the field of psychology is to bring to light the ways in which masculinity in science has operated over time, and within various cultures, without reenacting history by the exclusion of women or femininity from the discipline. However, in order for women to be able to practice psychology there were (and still are) many obstacles before feminism and scientific advancement can become truly cohesive. by the GetPsyched Blog Committee: Alexandra B., Ally S., Ella R., Nida A. and Sandhya S.
This blog has been up and running for around a month and a half now, and we thought it would be beneficial to meet the brains behind GetPsyched. Read more about who we are and why we came together to work on this Psychology Society initiative! Interview by Nida Ansari, featuring Tristan K.
Today's student spotlight is all about Tristan, one of the Fourth Year Reps on the Society this year! I virtually had a conversation with Tristan about his roles on campus (specifically as a Learning Peer Helper in the Library) as well as some study and organization tips he thinks all students should know. Read all about our conversation here! Interview by Nida Ansari, featuring Brenna M. and Brittany P.
The Psychology Society hosted Thesis Night not too long ago, and it was a jam-packed event including both faculty and student speakers! We heard from Dr. Mark Fenske, current PSYC*4870 and PSYC*4880 intstuctor, who shared what the Honours Thesis course looks like and how assessment works. We then heard from Sharon Helder, Academic Advisor, who shared a comprehensive presentation about the process of applying to the program (you can find resources here). Finally, we heard from Brenna and Brittany, two students that are going through and have gone through the Thesis experience during and before a COVID-impacted semester, respectively. We wanted to catch up with the two Thesis students so we could hear more about their own experiences. What was their favourite part? What was not so easy? And what would they recommend to future Thesis students? All of that and more, right here! |
