by Ally Schuller For some background, my name is Ally Schuller and I am a second year Marketing Management student with a minor in Honours Psychology. I am part of the Psychology Society Executive Team as the Administrator. This is my first year on the Society and it took over 1 year to become a part of any executive team at UofG. With experience in DECA, a business club, throughout high school, and being a part of the Music Council, I have had many experiences with extra-curricular activities. For me, being a part of the music department was just an overall amazing experience and made going to school enjoyable. I think that if everyone found something similar to that for themselves, it would make school so much more enjoyable. So, I applied to these positions with the mindset of: Who knows what might happen if you don’t even try? When I came to University, I knew I wanted to find something that really called out to me as the music department did for me in high school. I applied to so many positions on University clubs and associations that I can’t even remember them all! Of course I got discouraged when I didn’t get any positions but I decided not to put myself in a bad position, as I had the courage to try and put myself out there. Instead of being in charge as a management role, I joined as a delegate or just a general member of various associations. I really enjoyed doing that as I didn’t have to give hours and hours of my time in my first year, still trying to figure out how to study and live away from home for the first time. I didn’t apply for this current position that I have on the Society until September 2020 when they were looking for an Administrator. The process was so fast and within days I got an offer to join! I really couldn’t believe it as I spent so many hours applying to other roles and I didn’t get those. "Who knows what might happen if you don’t even try?" Above is a saying I now hold deep as I want to apply to everything I see that might be a good fit. With currently applying for internships for the Summer semester, this philosophy has helped me gain interviews and really helped my professional development. Nobody knows what could happen if you don’t apply yourself or ask a member of a society you are interested in what their role is like or how they like the organization. This is a great skill to gain and I think that anyone who applies themselves to any position should be proud of themselves, as they showed up for themselves and maybe put themselves out of your comfort zone. But let me say, it is definitely worth it.
So, I urge you to find different university clubs or associations and apply for executive positions - it is always worth it as you never know what might come of it. I think that the Psychology Society is a great group to be a part of, so maybe check our available positions for next school year! In closing, just remember this saying as it has undoubtedly helped me many times before, Who knows what might happen if you don’t even try? - Ally Ally is a second-year student at the University of Guelph and is the Administrator on the Psychology Society.
